GERTRUDE AND ALICE:

SALON AT 27 RUE DE FLEURUS

2009
Assemblage: 23" x 26"

Photographic Editions: Archival Ink on Cotton Rag

'The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas' by Gertrude Stein, was the inspiration for my assemblage. Pictured in the piece alongside the female leads are Henri Matisse, Ernest Hemingway, and Pablo Picasso; just a few of the many artists the Gertrude and Alice supported and befriended.

It was my wish to give the piece a warm, intimate, Parisian feel. The paintings on the walls are small representations of the actual pieces she owned and hung in her home. Her Saturday night salon was a sought-after validation, signifying that Stein had recognized a talent worth of inclusion into a rarefied group of gifted artists.
